Cruiser Racing at Skerries A number of varied cruisers ranging in size up to 45 feet race at Skerries according to a handicap system administered by the Irish Sailing Association which allocates the handicaps depending on the boat's size and sailplan. E-Boats (see separate page) represent the only cruisers which race on a fleet basis although they can also be handicapped with the other cruisers. The cruiser fleet races twice weekly in the Skerries area although some long distance races are also arranged, to the Isle of Man, to Carlingford and to Wicklow. A number of these boats also undertake leisure cruisers each summer. Favourite destinations are Scotland, the south coast of Ireland, Wales and France. For detailed reports on cruises see the separate cruising section. The club arranges winter storage for cruisers on the premises. A crane is hired each September to lift the boats out and again the following April to lower them back into the water. The 2008 date for “Craning in” is 19th April (HW 12:42 BST 4.0m). This is two weeks before the trip to Carlingford. A race is planned for Sunday 27th April to give everyone a chance to check their boats.
